Free blackjack at Springbok: drill the decisions, not your wallet
Free blackjack at Springbok runs in the lobby's practice mode: stay logged out, open Table Games, tap a blackjack tile and choose Try It! to play with a R1,000.00 fun balance. The tables are Blackjack, Blackjack + Perfect Pairs and Suit 'Em Up Blackjack. Practice hands teach the rules and the basic decisions; good decisions lower the house edge without removing it, and fun chips never pay out.
18+. Fun chips never pay out. Bonus wagering ignores blackjack, so real play here means a plain deposit with no coupon, and a budget fixed first.

The blackjack tables you can practise
All three sit in the lobby's Table Games tab. The plain table is the place to learn; the other two add an optional side bet settled on your first two cards.
| Table | What it adds | Side bet pays (Springbok's figures) |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack | The plain game | No side bet |
| Blackjack + Perfect Pairs | A side bet that your first two cards form a pair | Perfect pair 25:1, coloured pair 12:1, mixed pair 6:1 |
| Suit 'Em Up Blackjack | A side bet that your first two cards share a suit | Suited Aces 60:1, suited blackjack 10:1, suited pair 5:1, suited eleven 3:1, other suited 2:1 |

Springbok's blackjack rules, and what they change
At Springbok's plain table a blackjack pays 3:2 and insurance 2:1. Bets run from R1 to R500 a round, and Springbok's article puts the chips at R2 to R200. Each house rule changes how a hand plays:
- The blackjack payout. An ace with a ten-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack, paid at the higher rate quoted above rather than at even money.
- Dealer hits soft 17. A dealer holding an ace counted as 11 plus a six must draw again, which tilts the game slightly towards the house compared with tables where the dealer stands.
- Double on any two cards. Double your bet on any opening pair and take exactly one more card.
- One card to split aces. Each split ace gets a single card, with no further hits.
- Insurance. Offered when the dealer shows an ace, it is a separate bet that the dealer holds blackjack. Basic strategy never takes it.
Practise at the stake you would really use, not at the top of the table's range: a fun balance spent on maximum bets is gone in a few hands and teaches you very little.
Using practice hands to learn basic decisions
Basic strategy is the play that loses least over time for each of your totals against each dealer card. Played that way, blackjack has the lowest house edge Springbok lists for any of its tables; played by hunch, the edge is higher. It is a way to lose more slowly, never a way to win.
Starter decisions to drill first
- Always split aces and eights.
- Never split tens or fives; play a pair of fives as a total of ten.
- Stand on hard 17 and above; always hit hard 8 and below.
- Hit hard 12 to 16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher; stand on hard 13 to 16 when the dealer shows 2 to 6.
- Double hard 11 against any dealer card from 2 to 10.
- Turn down insurance.
General basic-strategy plays for games where the dealer hits soft 17. Springbok does not publish its deck count, so check a full chart for the closer calls.
A practice drill
Decide before you click
Say the play out loud, or note it down, before touching a button. The aim is to catch the hands where you hesitate.
Check against the chart
Compare each decision with a basic-strategy chart straight after the hand, not at the end of the session.
Keep a mistake tally
Over a set number of hands, count the plays you got wrong and aim for fewer next time. Whether the hand won does not matter.
| Bet | House edge (Springbok's figure) |
|---|---|
| Blackjack (basic strategy) | 0.65% |
| Perfect Pairs side bet | 6.11% |
| Suit 'Em Up side bet | 3.41% |
Springbok says these come from the in-game rules panels (Springbok article). A lower edge means you lose more slowly on average; it never turns a game in your favour.

Side bets in fun mode: watch them, don't chase them
Perfect Pairs and Suit 'Em Up pay big multiples when they land, which is exactly why they are worth watching on fun chips first. On Springbok's figures in the table above, both carry a far higher house edge than the main game played by basic strategy. Leave the side bet on for a stretch of practice hands and note how often it pays anything at all: the headline multiples belong to the rarest hands.
Why practice wins stay in practice
Blackjack in fun mode is the same contest with nothing at stake, and that difference matters. A good run of practice hands says nothing about the next real hand, and the cards owe you nothing after a losing streak. What practice can do is make the right play automatic, so a real session is about your budget rather than about working out what to do.
From fun chips to rand
Ready for real money?
When the right plays come without thinking, real blackjack is a budget decision, not a bonus decision. Springbok's terms leave blackjack off the list of games that count towards wagering, and staking a left-out game during wagering can void the bonus, so skip the coupon and keep the stake you practised with.
Play without a bonus
- Open an account, pay in rand and skip the Redeem Coupon box.
- No bonus playthrough: the T&Cs simply want each deposit played through once before you cash out.
- Keep to the stake you practised with.
Budget first. Fix the most you are willing to lose before any deposit, and walk away once it is spent.
